Following the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated Japan on Friday, March 11, people all over the world have been wondering how they can get involved with, or donate, to the disaster relief effort in Japan. NHK WORLD has announced that, as of March 25, 24:00 JST, their live USTREAM TV Channel will be discontinued. For extended and up-to-date news coverage of the disaster in Japan, you can visit NHK WORLD English. Satellite Photos of Japan Before and After Quake/Tsunami Fans in the anime community can also contribute donations to an upcoming podcast fundraiser that is being hosted by The Unofficial One Piece Podcast, Konoha Corner and the SSSA Podcast. The podcast will be available via Ustream from 6:00 pm on Saturday March 19th, through Sunday March 20th. An ANIME FANS GIVE BACK TO JAPAN page has been erected on GlobalGiving, where donations can be given. ANIME FANS GIVE BACK TO JAPAN 24 Hour Podcast Fundraiser Pop sensation Lady Gaga is showing her support for the Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims, by designing an exclusive charity wristband, which is now available on her official site. The wristband has “We pray for Japan” inscribed on it, in both English and Japanese. It costs $5.00 USD, and those who purchase the item have the option of making an additional donation. All proceeds from the sale of these wristbands will go to the disaster relief efforts in Japan. As of March 16 these charity wristbands have raised $250,000. Lady Gaga Japan Quake/Tsunami Wristband Canadian and Local Updates: Anyone who wants to reach Canadian friends or family members in Japan, you can call DFAIT at 613-943-1055. There is also a toll free line available in Canada at 1-800-387-3124. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada have created a Help Page for anyone seeking information about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto, who have been active for over 40 years in the Japanese community here, have committed to donating $100,000, to the earthquake/tsunami disaster relief in Japan. Proceeds from the JCCC’s upcoming annual Sakura Ball on April 9th, will be used to fund this donation. The JCCC will also be organizing a number of community related benefit events over the next few months, dedicated to raising disaster relief funds. An upcoming fundraising concert is currently in the works. They have also started a disaster relief page, where donations can be made online and via cheque.
